North Star Genealogy Conference

FGGMN President, Barb Wilson, attended the North Star Genealogy Conference on October 24 in Eagan, Minnesota. The conference focused on general genealogy in the state of Minnesota. With an eye on new members, Barb talked to young attendees to learn how they got involved in genealogy. Conference topics included: (1) DNA; (2) AI’s use to get ideas about how to title things and get a summary of a specific article but not using it to get facts because AI chooses words that are close together without fact checking; (3) getting more out of the records (including, e.g., FGGMN’s presentation in January); and (4) some states are denying access to records (e.g., marriage and death). Professional genealogists at the conference are worried about states, mostly in the South, passing new laws about restricting access to records so less information will be available in the future. Minnesota is one of the most open-record states.
